New Veteran Student Handout

Step 1: 

Complete the appropriate veterans education benefit forms to apply for your benefits (http://www.gibill.va.gov/apply-for-benefits/).     

Step 2:

Determining Your Eligibility

Once you have been approved for veterans’ education benefits the Veterans Affairs Central Office will send you documentation outlining the amount of tuition and fees that will be paid.  Submit this documentation to the Office of Student Financial Assistance.  This documentation will be kept in your Veteran Student file and is used to certify Veterans education benefits.  For additional information regarding the type of documentation that must be submitted consult the New Veteran Student Handout.

Step 3:

Complete the TCNJ Veterans Education Benefits Request Form.  When you complete this online form it is sent electronically to the TCNJ Veterans Affairs Office. Please note you must completed the Veterans Education Benefits Form every academic year.

Step 4:

Make an appointment to meet with an Associate Director if you have questions.  Bring your Veterans education benefits certification paperwork to the appointment if it has not been submitted.  To schedule an appointment to meet with an Associate Director call 609-771-2211 or email OSFA@tcnj.edu.

Step 5:

Funds Disbursement

Depending upon your Veteran Education Benefit Program the funds are disbursed as follows:

  • Chapter 33 – Post GI Bill: The fund are sent directly to The College of New Jersey and posted to your student account.
  • Chapter 30 – Montgomery GI Bill: The funds are sent directly to the student via direct deposit. For more information call toll-free 877-838-2778.
  • Chapter 35 – Dependents Educational Assistance: The funds are sent directly to the student.

Step 6:

After your first semester at TCNJ students follow the procedures for a continuing student under the ‘Getting Started’ section.
